1861: Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball was born in Almonte, Ontario. The former gym teacher in Springfield, MA was looking for a team sport to keep schoolboys occupied indoors during the winter.

1783: Man takes flight for the first time. Jean Francois Pilatre de Rozier and Marquis Francois Laurent d'Arlandes take the first untethered hot air balloon ride across the skies of Paris.

1789: The first national Thanksgiving Day was celebrated in the United States; the day had been designated by President George Washington in an official proclamation.
